Architecture students have one day to complete real world design challenge
WHAT
Students from the Washington, D.C. area’s six collegiate architecture programs participate in a day-long design challenge on Sunday, September 17, during which they are tasked with providing a creative solution that addresses real-world architecture, planning, and landscape architecture. Teams receive the design brief that morning and must present a final project by the end of the Design Charrette. A jury selects a winning team to be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, September 19.
Students come from The Catholic University of America, Howard University, University of the District of Columbia, Virginia Tech Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center, Morgan State University, and University of Maryland. The jury is led by David Greenbaum, FAIA, vice president, SmithGroupJJR, and includes Stephen Nutt, FAIA, NCARB, CAE, senior architect and advisor to the CEO, National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), as well as other industry professionals.
This program is generously supported by NCARB. Student participants will be invited to earn credit towards the Architectural Experience Program (AXP), as well as establish an NCARB Record—both key steps on the path to earning their license to practice architecture.

The Design Charrette takes place on Sunday, September 17 from 9 am to 5 pm in the Great Hall. The winning team is announced at an Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, September 19 from 5 to 6 pm, in advance of the Museum’s Spotlight on Design lecture with SmithGroupJJR.

The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ membership is made up of the architectural registration boards of all 50 states as well as those of the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. NCARB assists its member registration boards in carrying out their duties and provides a certification program for individual architects.
NCARB protects the public health, safety, and welfare by leading the regulation of the practice of architecture through the development and application of standards for licensure and credentialing of architects. In order to achieve these goals, the Council develops and recommends standards to be required of an applicant for architectural registration; develops and recommends standards regulating the practice of architecture; provides to Member Boards a process for certifying the qualifications of an architect for registration; and represents the interests of Member Boards before public and private agencies. NCARB has established reciprocal registration for architects in foreign countries.
