Explore The Evicted Note Cards, Written By Visitors – Part 1
Over the past few months the Evicted exhibition has been collecting note cards written by visitors who have stopped by to learn more about the eviction crisis across the United States. Since setting out the cards for anyone to express their feelings and experiences, we have collected nearly 100 cards. We will be sharing these experiences with you over the next couple of months as we near closer to the end of Evicted at the National Building Museum. The cards below have been chosen due to the visitors personal experience with eviction. We welcome you to read these stories and submit your own.
- I was raised in Harris County, Tx. My mom was a victim of violence; we left our home often. Our home was foreclosed on. We left my father in it without utilities. I do not have a “home” to return to. Eviction and displacement are silenced forms of violence against many.
- I have been evicted a few times. Each time young children were involved. It’s hard because leasing offices and landlords don’t understand that you also have to pay utilities, food, and other bills. Eviction is stupid unless the person just doesn’t want to play.
- I was evicted after my husband filed for divorce and eviction against me without my knowledge. I was homeless with three small children.
- Having been evicted before, it hits home. It captured the feeling of losing everything so accurately.
- My family has been through eviction more times than I can remember. I struggled in school because I was always worried about whether or not my mom was stressed and whether I/we would have a place to stay.
- As a person who has been evicted and is in the process of being evicted with a 2 year old child it’s hard. You shouldn’t have to work 50 hour weeks in order to live comfortable.
- Eviction caused me to lose my job because I had to miss [a] day.
- I was evicted twice in my teens and homeless, as a result, each time. The repercussions of poverty and that loss of dignity still haunt me almost 30 years later.
